The global fast-food chain has pulled a Christmas commercial produced with Artificial Intelligence following facing considerable public disapproval.

The brief film was created using AI video tools and was initially uploaded on the YouTube channel for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Viewer Response and Removal

Soon after it aired, commenters lambasted the implementation of AI in the commercial. Many described it as "creepy" and "poorly edited".

"This moment is an key lesson as we examine the appropriate utilization of Artificial Intelligence," said a spokesperson from the company.

The commercial was produced for the brand by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop. It showed various things that often go badly during the holidays, under the theme "not the most wonderful time of the year".

The Phenomenon of AI-Generated Ads

Adverts that incorporate AI-created content have become a growing trend among large corporations, notably for the holiday period.

  • Another beverage giant has recently released back-to-back AI-generated holiday commercials.
  • Technical Challenges: As clips produced with generative AI are prone to distort the more extended they are, the majority of such clips tend to be roughly short in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also sparked concerns about job displacement in the advertising sector, with some observers noting it could reduce opportunities for production staff.

Defense from the Creators

After the ad being taken down, The Sweetshop's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, defended the advert.

She stated, the creation took "over a month and a half" and involved creating "numerous versions" which were then crafted afterward "in the same way we would on any standard production".

"This wasn't an AI trick," she commented. "It was a finished piece."

Mixed Audience Sentiment

While the McDonald's ad was mostly criticized, the sentiment for other AI-generated campaigns has been more mixed.

For instance, a recent AI-generated holiday spot from Coca-Cola reportedly achieved a 61% "favorable response" from the public.

However, several companies have likewise encountered scrutiny for employing AI in their campaigns. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that some described as "low-effort" and "disturbing".

The episode underscores the ongoing discussion within the advertising and creative industries about the trade-off between AI efficiency and creative integrity.
